V-TEK Fight Club: What Happens with a T-Shirt Gets a lot of Attention?
Posted by on
Sully's has been making sports-themed "Fight Club" tees for a long time, our first debuted in 2008! Our latest celebrates Jason Varitek, the long-time Captain and heart of the Sox. It has received a lot of love both on and off the field, but what happens when a T-shirt gets that kind of attention?
This:
If you google this latest shirt, this is what you'll get: our shirt (thankfully, top left!) and a thousand knock-offs. Ours is screen printed on a super-soft, high quality T-shirt. All of the other ones? Cheaply made counterfeits promoted by bots and printed direct-to-garment from low-resolution images found online.
Sadly, this is a common occurrence. Any time one of our t-shirts is worn by a celebrity or receives high-profile attention, a wave of fakes appear online, offered by dozens of different websites, and promoted by bogus online accounts:
On every Instagram and Twitter post made by people legitimately excited about the shirt, bots left comments like the one above to "Get it here!" and linking to a scammy bootleg site. We've had to deal with counterfeiters for years, but now it's almost impossible to keep up with.
One thing that helps a lot is when a reputable site or person chimes in and lets people know where to get our shirts. In this case we were super appreciative of Catherine Varitek for calling them out and telling people to visit us (thank you, Catherine!)
We do our best to let people know to look for the real deal, but many people are fooled and it hurts our brand. In 2018 when we launched the Joe Kelly Fight Club, a customer received a T-shirt from one such counterfeiter, and it was missing a letter! They reached out to us assuming we had sent it to them, and we had to let them know they'd been scammed.
If you're reading this, you're familiar with Sully's and our products, so we know you're in the right place. Unfortunately, even after 25 years many people are still new to our brand so we are continually trying to educate them about what we offer and exactly what they are buying and supporting.
We work really hard to make fun shirts that resonate with fans and get a lot of attention, and we will continue to be vigilant about protecting our ideas and products, so thank you for supporting our efforts.
Sincerely,
Chris Wrenn
